Overview
Timket Festival Celebration in Eritrea. This package focuses on the annual celebrations at Timket, the annual festival attended by tens of hundreds of thousands of visitors from all across Asmara, making this one of the largest and joyful yearly pilgrimages. Asmara is known as the “sacred city of Eritrea.”
The Timket Festival celebration in Eritrea aligns with the Ethiopian calendar, where the date typically falls on January 19 in a regular year and January 20 in a leap year, corresponding to January 10 in Terr. Orthodox Tewahedo congregations follow the Ethiopian calendar for liturgical purposes, which is similar to the Coptic calendar used in the Eastern Orthodox Church. As a result, the Ethiopian and Eritrean Epiphany, known as Timkat, usually coincides with the Epiphany of the Eastern Orthodox Church on January 19. However, during leap years in Ethiopia, Timkat is celebrated on the following day.
