Historical Background
In the late 19th century, the Italian colonial administration in Eritrea embarked on an ambitious project to build a railway system that would facilitate the transportation of goods and people across the country. The Eritrean Railway, which was constructed in phases, began in the 1880s and was initially designed to connect the coastal city of Massawa, a vital port on the Red Sea, with the capital city of Asmara, located in the heart of the country. The railway was later expanded to reach other urban centers in Eritrea, bolstering the country’s infrastructure and paving the way for increased economic development.
The Eritrean Railway gained a reputation for its difficult terrain and impressive engineering feats. It had to conquer steep slopes, twisty mountain routes, and dry deserts. Engineers had to use different methods, like switchbacks and cogwheel systems, to navigate the demanding landscape. The railway operated on a narrow gauge track, which made it better suited for the challenging terrain but had limitations on carrying heavy cargo.
Importance in colonial and economic contexts
During the period of Italian colonial rule, the Eritrean Railway was a crucial transportation route, primarily transporting raw materials such as salt, minerals, and agricultural products to the coast for export. Additionally, it facilitated the movement of Italian settlers and administrators to the interior. After World War II, when Eritrea came under British administration, the railway continued to play a vital role in the economy. Following Eritrea’s independence, efforts were made to preserve the railway as an important historical and cultural artifact
Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, and the Eritrean Railway fell into disrepair due to neglect and conflict. In recent years, efforts have been made to restore and preserve the railway as a historical and cultural heritage site. Preservationists and railway enthusiasts have worked to rehabilitate sections of the track and restore vintage locomotives and rolling stock.

Today, the Eritrean Railway is becoming a popular tourist attraction, offering scenic rides through breathtaking landscapes. Tourists can experience the nostalgia of riding on vintage steam locomotives and enjoy the stunning vistas of the Eritrean highlands.
